Hello In Stitches Family!
We get asked this question all the time – Can you re-embroider a garment after it’s been embroidered?
And it’s a really good question!
Short answer: no, we can’t re-embroider directly over existing embroidery.
But the good news? In many cases, we do have a solution that looks clean, intentional, and professional.
Why Re-Embroidering Isn’t an Option
Once a garment has already been embroidered, that area of fabric has been through a lot.
Embroidery works by stitching thousands of times through the fabric. Every stitch creates a hole, and those holes don’t magically disappear. When you try to embroider over existing embroidery, a few things happen:
- There are already too many needle holes in the fabric
- The layers of thread underneath create uneven bulk
- New stitches can’t sit flat or secure properly
- The fabric can weaken, pucker, or even tear
Even if it looks like there’s enough room, re-embroidering almost always results in poor stitch quality and a finished product that won’t hold up over time. That’s not something we’re comfortable putting our name on.
Quality matters to us, and we’d rather say no than give you something that won’t look right or last.
What We Can Do Instead: Custom Leatherette Patches
If your garment is still in good shape and the placement makes sense, we can often cover the old embroidery with a custom leatherette patch.
This is especially helpful for jackets, vests, quarter-zips, hoodies, and workwear that already have a logo or name stitched on them.
Leatherette patches work well because:
- They completely cover the existing embroidery and needle holes
- They create a smooth, stable surface for engraving
- They don’t stretch or distort like fabric patches can
- They look intentional, modern, and durable
Your logo or design is laser-engraved into the leatherette, then the patch is securely stitched onto the garment. The result looks like it was meant to be there all along.
What It Looks Like in Real Life

Instead of trying to hide the original embroidery, the patch becomes a design feature. Many customers tell us they actually prefer the finished look of the patch over the original embroidery.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
Leatherette patches are a great solution, but they aren’t right for every item. Before we recommend one, we look at:
- The size and location of the original embroidery
- The fabric and weight of the garment
- Whether a patch will sit flat and wear well over time
If it’s not a good fit, we’ll tell you honestly. Our goal is always to give you something you’ll be proud to wear or put on your team.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you just remove the old embroidery and stitch again?
No. Removing embroidery still leaves behind needle holes and fabric damage. Re-stitching over that area creates the same problems.
Does the patch damage the garment?
No. The patch is stitched on carefully and does not weaken the garment when placed correctly.
Will the old logo show through the patch?
No. The leatherette fully covers the existing embroidery.
Can you do this on customer-provided items?
Absolutely!
Is a leatherette patch my only option?
In many cases, yes. If a patch won’t work, we’ll let you know upfront.
