Groundhog Day: A Little History, a Lot of Winter, and Our Hope for Spring

Hello In Stitches Family,

Every year on February 2, we all pause for one very important question: will the groundhog see his shadow?

Groundhog Day has become a lighthearted break in the middle of winter, but it actually has roots that go back centuries. The tradition comes from Candlemas, a European holiday where people looked to animals to help predict the weather. When German settlers brought the tradition to Pennsylvania, they swapped hedgehogs for groundhogs. If the groundhog saw his shadow, it meant six more weeks of winter. No shadow meant spring might arrive early.

And just like that, a small, furry animal became our unofficial winter weather expert.

So… Six More Weeks of Winter. Now What?

If the groundhog predicts more winter, it doesn’t mean we panic. It just means we settle in a little longer.

For groundhogs, winter is all about hibernation and conserving energy. The best thing we can do for them is pretty simple: give them space until spring arrives. (Except for when Punxsutawney Phil gets pulled out of his burrow, but we will ignore that little intrusion.)

For the rest of us, six more weeks of winter is an invitation to slow down. Cozy layers, warm drinks, and enjoying the quieter pace of the season can be a gift if we let it be. It’s also a great time to start thinking ahead.

When Winter Feels Extra Cold

Some winters, kind of like this one, make sure we really feel them. Snow piles up, the air bites a little harder, and everything feels frozen solid.

On days like those, it’s easy to understand why Groundhog Day is so popular. We’re all just looking for a sign that warmer weather is coming.

Looking Ahead to Spring (We’re Ready!)

No matter what the groundhog predicts, spring always finds its way back.

Around here, we’re looking forward to flowers blooming, longer days, and that first stretch of sunshine that makes being outside feel easy again. Spring brings fresh energy, lighter layers, and new projects on the horizon. It’s when many people start planning events, updating apparel, and thinking about what they’ll need for the months ahead.

No Matter the Forecast…

Groundhog Day is a reminder that seasons change, even when winter feels like it’s hanging on a little too long. Whether spring comes early or right on schedule, we’re already looking forward to what’s next.

If you’re starting to think about spring events, fresh apparel, or custom pieces for the warmer months, we’re always happy to help you plan ahead when the time feels right.

And until then, we’ll keep an eye on the groundhog… and the flowers.
