Flag Day History: Why We Celebrate the American Flag on June 14

Hello In Stitches Family,

Every year on June 14, Americans celebrate Flag Day, a holiday dedicated to honoring the American flag and the values it represents. While it may not receive the same attention as Memorial Day or Independence Day, Flag Day has a rich history and serves as an important reminder of our nation’s heritage, freedom, and service.

For military families like ours, the day carries special meaning.

The History of Flag Day

Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States. The resolution was simple:

“Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

Although the flag was officially adopted in 1777, Flag Day itself did not become a national observance until much later. Throughout the late 1800s, communities across the country began holding celebrations to honor the flag and teach its history.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day. Then, in 1949, President Harry Truman signed legislation making Flag Day an official national observance.

Today, Americans continue to celebrate by displaying the flag, participating in community events, and reflecting on the principles it represents.

What the American Flag Represents

The American flag is more than a piece of fabric. It serves as a symbol of freedom, unity, sacrifice, and the shared history of the United States.

For generations, the Stars and Stripes have flown over schools, businesses, homes, military bases, and historic landmarks. It has accompanied soldiers into battle, welcomed service members home, and stood as a symbol of hope during some of our nation’s most challenging moments.

The flag reminds us not only of where we have been as a country but also of the values we continue to strive toward.

Why Flag Day Matters to Military Families

As an Air Force family, Flag Day holds a personal significance for us.

The American flag has been present during ceremonies, deployments, promotions, retirements, and homecomings. It represents the commitment of those who serve and the sacrifices made by military members and their families.

For many veterans and active-duty service members, the flag serves as a powerful reminder of duty, service, and the freedoms that generations have worked to protect.

That’s one reason why Flag Day remains important. It gives us an opportunity to pause and appreciate the people, history, and ideals represented by our nation’s flag.
