Every year on June 14, Americans celebrate Flag Day, a holiday dedicated to honoring the American flag and the values it represents. While it may not receive the same attention as Memorial Day or Independence Day, Flag Day has a rich history and serves as an important reminder of our nation’s heritage, freedom, and service.
For military families like ours, the day carries special meaning.
The History of Flag Day
Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the flag of the United States. The resolution was simple:
“Resolved, that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
Although the flag was officially adopted in 1777, Flag Day itself did not become a national observance until much later. Throughout the late 1800s, communities across the country began holding celebrations to honor the flag and teach its history.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day. Then, in 1949, President Harry Truman signed legislation making Flag Day an official national observance.
Today, Americans continue to celebrate by displaying the flag, participating in community events, and reflecting on the principles it represents.
What the American Flag Represents
